New 4K re-release trailer for Béla Tarr’s ‘Werckmeister Harmonies’

Not now and not later.” Janus Films has unveiled a new official trailer for the re-release of the 4K restoration of the 2000 film titled Werckmeister harmonies, which originally appeared at the Cannes Film Festival in the Fortnite Directors section. This new 4K version premiered last year at the Toronto and Taipei Golden Horse Film Festivals, and will play in several arthouse theaters, starting with the Cinema at Lincoln Center in New York. Worth catching in the cinema if you have the chance. “Bella Tarr’s mesmerizing parable of social collapse is an enigma of transcendent visual, philosophical and mystical resonance.” In it, a young man witnesses the escalation of violence in his small hometown following the arrival of a mysterious circus attraction – featuring a massive stuffed whale and a strange man known as “The Prince”. The stars of the movie Sandor Besa, Lars Rudolph, Peter Fitz, Hana Shigula, and many other locals. The title refers to the baroque music theorist Andreas Werkmeister. Giorgi Ezter, a central character in the story, gives a monologue presenting a theory that Werkmeister’s harmonic principles are responsible for aesthetic and philosophical problems in all music since then, and should be eliminated by a new theory of tuning and harmony.
