First teaser for Wei Shujun’s haunting mystery “Only the River Flows”

“Fate is all the truth we cannot see.” Cinetic Marketing has unveiled a teaser festival trailer for the Chinese indie thriller titled Only the river flowsThe latest work of a filmmaker named Wei Shujun (also of Step into the wind and The ripples of life before). It will premiere next week at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. A police chief investigates a series of murders in a riverside town in rural China in the 1990s. An arrest is quickly made, though mysterious clues push the officer to delve deeper into the hidden behavior of the locals. The entire synopsis ends there, without giving any more hints as to what is happening. The stars of the movie Joe Ilong, Chloe Maayan, Oh Tianlaiand Tong Linkai. It’s a very mysterious trailer with several fly shots at the end showing what it’s like Much Broader than just a simple murder story. Look out for buzz about it from Cannes soon – looks damn good.

Set in the 1990s, in Anpu Town, rural China. A woman’s body was found near the river. Ma Zhe (Zhu Yilong), the chief of the criminal police, heads the murder investigation which quickly leads to an apparent arrest. His superiors rush to congratulate him and urge him to close the case and move on, but several clues push Ma Zha to delve deeper into the hidden behavior of his friends. Based on a short story by Yu Hua, the film is about a homicide detective investigating a series of murders in a rural village.
